The Good News
The word gospel literally means “good news.” But for news to truly be good, we first have to understand the bad news that makes it necessary.
God created us to know Him, love Him, and live in a relationship with Him. He is holy, perfect, and good. Yet every one of us has chosen our own way instead of His. The Bible calls this sin. Sin is more than simply doing bad things. It is rejecting God’s rule and choosing ourselves over Him.
Because of sin, there is now a massive separation between us and God. Sin has created a chasm we cannot cross on our own. No amount of effort, morality, religion, or good works can repair what has been broken.
“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Jesus Christ
But God did for us what we could never do for ourselves. We were trapped in sin, brokenness, and death, unable to save ourselves or make our way back to God. But God did the unthinkable. He did not leave us there, and He did not wait for us to somehow reach Him. Instead, He came to us.
God sent His one and only Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus lived the perfect life that we could never live and died the death that we deserved because of our sin. On the cross, He took our place, bearing the punishment for sin and paying the debt that we owed so we could be forgiven and restored to God.
Three days later, Jesus rose from the grave, defeating sin and death forever. His resurrection proved that the payment was complete, death no longer has the final word, and through Him a way has been made for us to be brought back to God.
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
What’s Your Response?
Jesus has made a way where there was no way. The bridge has been built, but knowing it exists is not enough. Salvation comes when you personally place your faith in Jesus Christ and trust in what He has done for you. We are not saved by good works, religious effort, or trying to earn our way to God. Salvation is a gift of grace received through faith.
Romans 10:9 says, “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Responding to the gospel means turning from trusting in yourself and placing your trust in Jesus. It means surrendering to His leadership and recognizing Him as Lord. Following Jesus is not simply a one-time decision but the beginning of a new life. As disciples, we are called to walk with Him, grow to become more like Him, and live out the purpose He has created us for.
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.”
